A Two-Way Street
The students from Virginia Tech, Radford University and New River Community College who make Cambria their church home away from home are a vital part of our fellowship. They minister to us as at least as much as we minister to them. As these students mature they often take on service and leadership roles – teaching children and youth in Sunday School, leading RAs, GAs and Acteens, leading a special Bible Study for adults, or singing in the choir. They serve as role models for our youth and sources of optimism for our adults. Many adults in our church become encouragers, listeners and mentors for these students.
Bible Study in Sunday School
A hearty group of college students attend our College Sunday School class, led by Olen Gardner and Kathie Dickenson. Most lessons are based on Bible studies in the quarterly Collegiate magazine by Lifeway. The class environment is welcoming, and questions and discussions are encouraged. Sometimes students volunteer to teach class.
Fellowship
Nearly every Sunday the college students are invited to someone’s home for lunch or go out to eat as a group after church. At least once a year, usually in the fall, they are guests at Olen and Frances Gardner’s home for a cookout and old time music. Students often plan other events, such as attending the Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store, especially on nights when Olen and his gospel group are appearing there.
On Campus
We encourage our students to join a campus Christian organization, such as Baptist Campus Ministry. By getting involved in Bible study and prayer groups throughout the week, you can build a peer group for support and fellowship.
Need a Ride?
Usually students can find rides or arrange car pools to the church. If you need help getting here, call the church at (540) 382-2490. If no one answers, leave a message with your name, phone number and address.
